During the entire school year, students from pre-kindergarten have been learning numbers from 1 to 10 in different ways. According to the Singapore Method, it is ideal to follow the CPA sequence (concrete-pictorial-abstract). To work on the concrete phase, students count and work on the number-quantity relationship using snap cubes, rods, and ten frames. This helps them understand that each number has a corresponding amount. For students to learn the pictorial understanding of numbers, they work on their books matching images with what they already did with concrete material (eg: coloring ten frames and snap cubes), using their knowledge to solve problems and transform their image of real objects into drawings. In order for the kids to get to the abstract phase or CPA, they write the numbers, matching the digit with the number of objects, turning concrete material into abstract concepts, and some of them even know how to write the number words! The CPA is a wonderful strategy for students to develop solid foundations for higher thinking functions and problem-solving, allowing students to feel successful and satisfied with their educational process.
