En esta edición de Lions' Honor, tuvimos el honor de entrevistar a Astrid Puentes Riaño, una destacada exalumna del Colegio Rochester de la promoción 1993. Astrid es una abogada colombiana, graduada de la Universidad de Los Andes en Bogotá, con una maestría en Derecho Comparado de la Universidad de Florida y otra en Derecho Ambiental de la Universidad del País Vasco.
Con más de veinte años de experiencia en litigio de interés público, Astrid se ha destacado especialmente en la protección del medio ambiente, los derechos humanos y la justicia climática en América Latina. Actualmente, se desempeña como consultora independiente en derechos humanos, ambiente y justicia climática. Desde el 2003 hasta el 2021, fue codirectora ejecutiva de la Asociación Interamericana para la Defensa del Ambiente, AIDA.
Recientemente, Astrid ha sido designada por el Consejo de Derechos Humanos de las Naciones Unidas como la próxima Relatora Especial sobre el derecho humano a un ambiente limpio, saludable y sostenible. Este mandato ha sido crucial para el reconocimiento de este derecho fundamental, y su renovación incluye un cambio de nombre para reflejar su importancia en la agenda global.
Astrid, siendo la primera mujer y representante del Sur Global en este mandato, se siente honrada por la oportunidad de continuar el valioso trabajo realizado por sus predecesores, John Knox y David R. Boyd. Su principal objetivo será garantizar la protección efectiva de un medio ambiente limpio, sano y sostenible para todas las personas, especialmente para aquellas en situaciones de vulnerabilidad.
Como colombiana, mexicana y latina, Astrid está comprometida a aportar su visión, perspectiva, experiencia y conocimiento para avanzar en la protección de los derechos humanos y el medio ambiente a nivel global.
Astrid también reflexiona sobre la influencia significativa que tuvo su educación en el Colegio Rochester y sus profesores en su camino hacia la defensa del medio ambiente y los derechos humanos. Recuerda con gratitud a profesores como Elizabeth Ramírez, Rodrigo Cáceres y Raúl Adámez, cuya dedicación y enseñanzas dejaron una huella profunda en su desarrollo personal y profesional.
Destaca especialmente el impacto de Mamá Chavita, quien, con sus lecciones de ortografía, inculcó en Astrid la importancia de escribir correctamente, habilidad fundamental en su trabajo actual. Además, resalta la importancia del nivel de inglés que adquirió en el colegio, lo cual le ha permitido abrir puertas y desempeñarse con éxito en un contexto internacional.
Finalmente, Astrid enfatiza el valor de la educación en valores que recibió en el Colegio Rochester, complementando los principios inculcados por sus padres en casa. Reconoce que esta formación le ha brindado una conciencia de los privilegios que posee y la importancia de utilizarlos para servir a quienes más lo necesitan en una región marcada por la desigualdad como América Latina.
Astrid, con su experiencia y compromiso, es un ejemplo inspirador de cómo la formación académica y los valores inculcados en el Colegio Rochester pueden llevar a logros significativos en la protección del medio ambiente y los derechos humanos a nivel internacional.

Interview with Alumna Astrid Puentes Riaño: Environmental and Human Rights Advocate
In this edition of Lions’ Honor, we have the honor of interviewing Astrid Puentes Riaño, an outstanding Rochester School alumna from the class of 1993. Astrid is a Colombian lawyer, graduated from Universidad de Los Andes in Bogotá, with a Master’s degree in Comparative Law from the University of Florida and another in Environmental Law from the University of the Basque Country.
With over twenty years of experience in public interest litigation, Astrid has been particularly active in environmental protection, human rights and climate justice in Latin America. She currently serves as an independent consultant on human rights, environment and climate justice. From 2003 to 2021, she was Co-executive Director of the Interamerican Association for Environmental Defense, AIDA.
Astrid has recently been appointed by the United Nations Human Rights Council as the next Special Rapporteur on the human right to a clean, healthy and sustainable environment. This mandate has been crucial to the recognition of this fundamental right, and her reappointment includes a name change to reflect its importance on the global agenda.
Astrid, being the first woman and representative of the Global South in this mandate, is honored by the opportunity to continue the valuable work carried out by her predecessors, John Knox and David R. Boyd. Her main objective will be to ensure the effective protection of a clean, healthy and sustainable environment for all people, especially those in vulnerable situations.
As a Colombian, Mexican and Latina, Astrid is committed to contributing her vision, perspective, experience, and knowledge to advance the protection of human rights and the environment globally.
Astrid also reflects on the significant influence her education at Rochester School and her teachers had on her path to environmental and human rights advocacy. She recalls with gratitude teachers such as Elizabeth Ramirez, Rodrigo Caceres and Raul Adámez, whose dedication and teachings left a deep imprint on her personal and professional development.
She especially highlights the impact of “Mamá Chavita”, who, with her spelling lessons, instilled in Astrid the importance of writing correctly, a fundamental skill in her current work. She also highlights the importance of the level of English she acquired at school, which has allowed her to open doors and perform successfully in an international context.
Finally, Astrid emphasizes the value of the education in values she received at Rochester School, complementing the principles instilled by her parents at home. She recognizes that this education has given her an awareness of the privileges she possesses and the importance of using them to serve those most in need in a region marked by inequality such as Latin America.
Astrid, with her experience and commitment, is an inspiring example of how the academic training and values instilled at Rochester School can lead to significant achievements in the protection of the environment and human rights at the international level.
