In a fascinating interview, conducted by Andrés Mojica, Rochester School Alumni Center Coordinator, and Miguel Benítez, Rochester School alumni, we explore his journey from the school's classrooms to his outstanding achievements in the world of musical theater. How did his experience at the school influence his academic and professional formation? Discover the key moments, inspirations and values that have guided Miguel on his journey from Rochester High School to Rosario University and beyond.
Tell us a little about your experience at our school and how you think this experience influenced your academic formation?
R/ My experience at the school and especially the last years was very rewarding, as it allowed me to find a north that would lead me towards what I wanted to do and be in the future. The artistic emphasis was vital in my high school life and allowed me to develop skills to be prepared for college.
Can you share with us what were the highlights of your education at Rochester School that contributed to this new achievement?
A/ As I mentioned before, the artistic emphasis that the school allowed me to take was crucial in my previous education. The continuous artistic and cultural events promoted by the school as well as the motivation from my arts teachers was always the fuel that allowed me to continue and trust in my process. Working in a team was also a lesson that my school process taught me and it is one of the most important tools that I used the most during my college life and that I will undoubtedly continue to use in my professional life.
Was there a particular professor or class at Rochester School that inspired you or significantly influenced you in your professional formation?
R/ Without a doubt Iliana Aljure and Fernando Pardo are the ones to whom I am infinitely grateful. Iliana was the one who always trusted me from the beginning and motivated me to take the path of art as a way of life and Fer was always that teacher who infected you with love for what he did. Entering his classroom was like entering an ecosystem totally apart from the rest of the school and it was in that place where I was able to be myself for the first time and today I feel proud to call Fer my friend.
How do you think the values and education you received at school helped you stand out in your undergraduate program at Universidad del Rosario?
A/ I believe that of the things that the school fostered, the most important and the one that served me the most as a resource throughout my university life was teaching me to know how to work in a team and to be able to work with everyone. The critical reading that the Spanish and English classes gave me has also been vital for areas such as theater and art history. And last but not least I remember with joy that the last school year together with some classmates we created a subject called advanced music in which Fernando Pardo taught us all about music grammar and I believe that without that class I would not have been able to survive the first semesters of college.
Have you applied the skills and knowledge acquired at Rochester School in your academic career at Universidad del Rosario? Can you give us specific examples?
A/ The music grammar classes allowed me to arrive at a certain level higher than my classmates who had no previous information. Playing piano became easier, understanding tap rhythms was much simpler and reading singing scores was like reading any other writing. Reading also allowed me to read complete works such as the Oresteada, analyze librettos and also give me tools to write my own work for my thesis. The alumni community is important at Rochester School.
Have you maintained any kind of connection with the school and its alumni since you graduated?
A/ My connection with the school has been unofficial hahaha. I still talk to my friends and some of my professors. Even in my thesis the sound engineers were Mateo Pinilla and Felipe Avella who are my best friends since college and the guitarist of my work was Fernando Pardo.
If you could give advice to current Rochester School students who aspire to achieve similar academic recognition, what would you tell them?
A/ I would tell them that whatever path they decide to take in their professional life, the important thing is to do things with passion, dedication and above all a lot of love. Everyone has an inner light that is destined to shine and it is up to us, only us, to dream with passion and leave our mark in order to shine.
What are your goals and future plans in relation to your career in Musical Theater and your continuing education?
R/ My plan is to train as a theater director through a specialization and also to venture into the world of teaching. The idea is to leave the country to obtain this training and then return and give this knowledge back to the people of the country in order to create more industry.
How would you like to contribute or be involved with the alumni community and the school's alumni center in the future?
A/ I have a dream and that is to be able to give back to the school, even if it is just a little bit of what it gave to me. Whether it's through teaching or any other way I can do it, I would love to bring more art to the school.

¿Cuéntanos un poco sobre tu experiencia en nuestro colegio y cómo crees que esta experiencia influyó en tu formación académica?
R/ Mi experiencia en el colegio y sobre todo los últimos años fue muy gratificante, ya que me permitió encontrar un norte que me llevara hacia lo que quería hacer y ser en un futuro. El énfasis artístico fue vital en mi vida de colegio y me permitió desarrollar habilidades para llegar preparado a la universidad.
¿Puedes compartir con nosotros cuáles fueron los aspectos más destacados de tu formación en el Colegio Rochester que contribuyeron a este nuevo logro?
R/ Como lo mencioné anteriormente, el énfasis artístico que permite tomar el colegio fue crucial en mi formación previa. Los continuos eventos artísticos y culturales que promovía el colegio al igual que la motivación por parte de mis profesores de artes siempre fue la gasolina que me permitió seguir y confiar en mi proceso. El trabajar en equipo también fue una enseñanza que me dejó mi proceso escolar y es una de las herramientas más importantes y que más utilicé durante mi vida universitaria y que sin duda seguiré utilizando en mi vida profesional.
¿Hubo algún profesor o clase en particular en el Colegio Rochester que te inspiró o influyó significativamente en tu formación profesional?
R/ Sin duda alguna Iliana Aljure y Fernando Pardo son con quien yo estoy infinitamente agradecido. Ili fue quien siempre confío en mí desde un principio y me motivó a tomar el camino del arte como forma de vida y Fer siempre fue ese profesor que te contagiaba del amor por lo que hacía. Entrar a su salón era como ingresar a un ecosistema totalmente aparte del resto del colegio y en ese lugar fue por donde primera vez pude ser yo mismo y hoy me siento orgulloso de poder llamar a Fer mi amigo.
¿Cómo crees que los valores y la educación que recibiste en colegio te ayudaron a destacarte en tu programa de pregrado en la Universidad del Rosario?
R/ Yo creo que de las cosas que fomenta el colegio la más importante y la que más me sirvió como recurso a través de mi vida universitaria fue enseñanza de saber trabajar en equipo y de poder trabajar con todo el mundo. La lectura crítica que me dejó las clases de español e inglés también ha sido vital para áreas como el teatro y la historia del arte. Y por último, pero no menos importante recuerdo con alegría que el último año escolar junto con unos compañeros creamos una materia que se llamaba música avanzada en la cual Fernando Pardo nos enseñó todo sobre gramática musical y yo creo que sin esa clase no hubiera podido sobrevivir los primeros semestres de universidad.
¿Has aplicado las habilidades y conocimientos adquiridos en el Colegio Rochester en tu carrera académica en la Universidad del Rosario? ¿Puedes darnos ejemplos específicos?
R/ Las clases de gramática musical me permitieron llegar con cierto nivel más alto que mis compañeros que no tenían información previa. Tocar piano se hizo más fácil, entender los ritmos del tap era mucho más sencillo y leer partituras de canto era como leer escrito cualquiera. También la lectura me permitió leer obras completas como la Oresteada, analizar libretos y también darme herramientas para escribir mi propia obra para mi tesis. La comunidad de exalumnos es importante en el Colegio Rochester.
¿Has mantenido algún tipo de conexión con el colegio y sus exalumnos desde que te graduaste?
R/ Mi conexión con el colegio ha sido extraoficial jajaja. Me sigo hablando con mis amigos y con algunos profesores. Inclusive en mi tesis los ingenieros de sonido fueron Mateo Pinilla y Felipe Avella quiénes son mis mejores amigos desde el colegio y el guitarrista de mi obra fue Fernando Pardo.
Si pudieras dar un consejo a los estudiantes actuales del Colegio Rochester que aspiran a lograr reconocimientos académicos similares, ¿qué les dirías?
R/ Les diría que sea cual sea el camino que decidan en su vida profesional, lo importante es hacer las cosas con pasión, dedicación y sobre todo mucho amor. Cada quien tiene una luz interna que está destinada brillar y está nosotros, solo nosotros, soñar con pasión y dejar huella para así poder brillar.
¿Cuáles son tus metas y planes futuros en relación con tu carrera en Teatro Musical y tu educación continua?
R/ Mi plan es formarme como director de teatro mediante una especialización y también incursionar en el mundo de la docencia. La idea es salir del país para obtener esta formación para luego regresar y devolverle este conocimiento a la gente del país para así poder crear más industria.
¿Cómo te gustaría contribuir o estar involucrado con la comunidad de exalumnos y el centro de exalumnos del colegio en el futuro?
R/ Yo tengo un sueño y es poder devolverle al colegio, así sea un poquito de lo que me dio a mí. Ya sea mediante la docencia o cualquier otra forma que pueda hacerlo, me encantaría poder llevar más arte al colegio.
