In the pages of our newsletter, we want to share an inspiring story that reflects the passion, determination and gratitude of one of our beloved alumni. Juan Sebastian Sierra, a 19 year old young man, takes us through his exciting journey from the soccer fields of Rochester College to the professional leagues of Colombia with the Patriotas team.
With heartfelt thanks to Rochester School, Juan Sebastian Sierra shares how his school days remain a pillar in his heart, even as he ventures into the professional soccer world. This interview is more than a narrative; it is a tribute to the community that saw him grow up and a reminder of how education, sports and values can shape the path to success.
"Soccer has always been my life. I've been playing since I was four years old and now, at 19, I'm about to fulfill my biggest dream: to play professional soccer thanks to the Patriotas team. It all started with the arrival of COVID. The opportunity arose to try out here in Tunja with Patriotas. After finishing ninth grade at Rochester High School, I had to make a very tough decision: to leave school, my family, my friends, after having been at Rochester since kindergarten. We were only two years away from graduating, but I chose to pursue my dream of being a professional player.
When things with COVID calmed down a bit, I arrived in Tunja, started training with the Patriots and entered the U-20 category. With mixed feelings, but mostly joy and enthusiasm, because I was playing soccer in a professional team.
Years went by and in 2023, thanks to my good performance in the U-20 and in the Boyacá national team, I was given the opportunity to be in the professional team in the last months of the year. Thanks to God, I was part of the squad that won the Betplay tournament and was promoted to the first division of Colombian soccer.
If everything continues like this, with God's help, next year I will be in the first division professional team. I hope to make my debut soon and that more dreams and goals that I have set all my life will continue to be fulfilled.
The school was a key support for me, both academically, soccer and psychologically. I always asked for permissions for tournaments, games and leaving early for training. I always had the support of the school to have those tools and permissions and to be able to do both things at the same time. They also helped me a lot to have responsibility, something I need now that I live alone in Tunja since I was 16, when I left Bogota. I am grateful to the school for all those things. But above all, I am grateful to Rochester School because they always supported me. They never turned their faces away from me, not even when I needed them the most, which was when I finished ninth grade. When I told them my plan to go to a professional team, they always said yes, they opened all the doors and to this day, when I go to school, they receive me with love, as if I had never left.
Today I feel part of Rochester, even though I haven't graduated. I love the school. I always tried to participate in everything, especially the shows because I loved dance. I wanted to be on the soccer team, but obviously, you have to choose and I opted for the professional team because it was my dream. The school always opened all the doors and gave me support. I am grateful to Rochester because it was my home for many years and it will continue to be my home. For my children, when I have them, I haven't even thought about another school to put them in. It has always been Rochester and always will be.
I feel that when we are in school, we don't give the real importance to virtues and all that it teaches us. When you leave school and start living your life, especially in a team where you don't know anyone, that's where virtues start to come in handy. You come to a team where nobody knows you and you have to make your way through quality, kindness, affection, respect, empathy and support. Today, here in the team, I have many friends, the teachers are like my friends and I think it is due to the virtues I developed at school.
As for leadership, I always characterized myself at school, at home and now in my soccer team, where I was the captain of the U-20 team. I am a reference, an example to follow for future generations. That leadership and the confidence to succeed is what I transmit to my team. Other tools I developed in school were self-evaluation and the belief in integral health, physical, emotional and mental. Being surrounded by people who share your dreams gives you mental health and happiness. All the dreams you have help you to be mentally strong, successful and happy.
Self-assessment is a very useful tool in soccer. There will be days when you won't be good, train poorly or don't do well in a game. That's where self-evaluation and continuous improvement come in. Many of the virtues I learned in school I am applying now that I live on my own and face life. It's something that has helped me a lot.
There is also teamwork. In the end, soccer is a team effort. You don't win championships alone, most of the awards are group awards, not individual ones. Of course there are individual achievements, but without belonging to a team, you will never win a trophy. I think that teamwork is very important, especially in a sport like soccer, which is a team sport.
I am totally grateful to the school. Whenever I can, I go and visit them. The facilities, the teachers, the directors are a part of my life that I will never forget and I will never regret being at Rochester. All the activities, the shows, everything we did with the school are things that marked me throughout my time at the school. Definitely, I am very grateful because they gave me all the opportunities, they gave me a hand and gave me all the support I needed for this career.
My time at the school will always be in my heart."
El Camino de Juan Sebastián Sierra: De las Aulas a las Canchas

Juan Sebastián Sierra, un joven de 19 años, nos lleva a través de su emocionante travesía desde los campos de fútbol del Colegio Rochester hasta las ligas profesionales de Colombia con el equipo de Patriotas.
Con un agradecimiento sincero al Colegio Rochester, Juan Sebastián Sierra comparte cómo su etapa escolar sigue siendo un pilar en su corazón, incluso cuando se aventura en el mundo profesional del fútbol. Esta entrevista es más que una narración; es un tributo a la comunidad que lo vio crecer y un recordatorio de cómo la educación, el deporte y los valores pueden moldear el camino hacia el éxito.
"El fútbol ha sido mi vida desde siempre. Juego desde que tengo cuatro años y ahora, con 19, estoy a punto de cumplir mi sueño más grande: jugar fútbol profesional gracias al equipo de Patriotas. Todo arrancó con la llegada del COVID. Surgió la oportunidad de probarme aquí en Tunja con los Patriotas. Después de terminar el noveno en el Colegio Rochester, tuve que tomar una decisión superdura: dejar la escuela, mi familia, mis amigos, después de haber estado en el Rochester desde el Prejardín. Estábamos a solo dos años de graduarnos, pero opté por perseguir mi sueño de ser jugador profesional.
Cuando las cosas con el COVID se calmaron un poco, llegué a Tunja, empecé a entrenar con los Patriotas y entré en la categoría sub-20. Con sentimientos encontrados, pero más que todo alegría y entusiasmo, porque estaba jugando al fútbol en un equipo profesional.
Pasaron los años y en el 2023, gracias a mi buen rendimiento en el sub-20 y en la selección de Boyacá, me dieron la oportunidad de estar en el equipo profesional en los últimos meses del año. Gracias a Dios, fui parte del plantel que ganó el torneo Betplay y ascendió a la primera división del fútbol colombiano.
Si todo sigue así, con la ayuda de Dios, el próximo año estaré en el equipo profesional de primera división. Espero el debut pronto y que se sigan cumpliendo más sueños y metas que he trazado toda mi vida.
El colegio fue clave para mí, un apoyo tanto académico como futbolístico y psicológico. Desde siempre, pedía permisos para torneos, partidos y salir temprano por los entrenamientos. Siempre conté con el respaldo del colegio para tener esas herramientas y permisos y poder hacer ambas cosas al mismo tiempo. También me ayudaron mucho a tener responsabilidad, algo que necesito ahora que vivo solo en Tunja desde los 16, cuando me fui de Bogotá. Todas esas cosas las agradezco al colegio. Pero sobre todo, vivo agradecido con el Colegio Rochester porque siempre me apoyaron. Nunca me voltearon la cara, ni siquiera cuando más los necesitaba, que fue al terminar el noveno. Cuando les conté mi plan de irme a un equipo profesional, siempre dijeron sí, abrieron todas las puertas y hasta hoy, cuando voy al colegio, me reciben con amor, como si nunca me hubiera ido.
Hoy me siento parte del Rochester, aunque no me haya graduado. Amo el colegio. Siempre traté de participar en todo, especialmente en los shows porque me encantaba la danza. Quise estar en el equipo de fútbol, pero obviamente, toca escoger y opté por el equipo profesional porque era mi sueño. El colegio siempre me abrió todas las puertas y brindó su apoyo. Estoy agradecido con el Rochester porque fue mi hogar durante muchos años y seguirá siendo mi casa. Para mis hijos, cuando los tenga, ni siquiera he pensado en otro colegio para meterlos. Siempre ha sido el Rochester y siempre lo será.
Siento que cuando estamos en el colegio, no le damos la verdadera importancia a las virtudes y a todo lo que nos enseña. Cuando sales del colegio y comienzas a vivir tu vida, sobre todo en un equipo donde no conoces a nadie, ahí es donde las virtudes empiezan a ser útiles. Llegas a un equipo donde nadie te conoce y tienes que abrirte camino a punta de calidad, amabilidad, cariño, respeto, empatía y apoyo. Hoy, aquí en el equipo, tengo muchos amigos, los profes son como amigos míos y creo que se debe a las virtudes que desarrollé en el colegio.
En cuanto al liderazgo, siempre me caractericé en el colegio, en casa y ahora en mi equipo de fútbol, donde fui el capitán de la sub-20. Soy un referente, un ejemplo a seguir para las futuras generaciones. Ese liderazgo y la confianza para salir adelante es lo que transmito a mi equipo. Otras herramientas que desarrollé en el colegio fueron la autoevaluación y la creencia en la salud integral, física, emocional y mental. Estar rodeado de personas que comparten tus mismos sueños te da salud mental y felicidad. Todos los sueños que tienes te ayudan a estar mentalmente fuerte, exitoso y feliz.
La autoevaluación es una herramienta muy útil en el fútbol. Habrá días en los que no estarás bien, entrenarás mal o no te irá bien en un partido. Ahí es donde entra la autoevaluación y el mejoramiento continuo. Muchas de las virtudes que aprendí en el colegio las estoy aplicando ahora que vivo solo y enfrento la vida. Es algo que me ha ayudado bastante.
También está el trabajo en equipo. Al final, el fútbol es un trabajo de equipo. No ganas campeonatos solo, la mayoría de los premios son grupales, no individuales. Claro que hay logros individuales, pero sin pertenecer a un equipo, no lograrás nunca levantar un trofeo. Considero que todo eso del trabajo en equipo es muy importante, especialmente en un deporte como el fútbol, que es de conjunto.
Agradezco totalmente al colegio. Cada vez que puedo, voy y los visito. Las instalaciones, los profesores, los directivos son una parte de mi vida que nunca olvidaré y jamás me arrepentiré de haber estado en el Rochester. Todas las actividades, los shows, todo lo que hicimos con el colegio son cosas que me marcaron durante toda mi etapa en el colegio. Definitivamente, estoy muy agradecido porque me dieron todas las oportunidades, me dieron la mano y me brindaron todo el apoyo que necesitaba para esta carrera. Mi etapa en el colegio siempre estará en mi corazón."
