On Tuesday, January 23rd, Don Jaime Alvarez, a retired NCO (Non-Commissioned
Officer) of the Colombian navy and veteran of the Korean war (1950-1953), visited
the school. He spoke to my tenth grade history and English classes about his
experience of the conflict and Colombia’s role in it. Don Jaime, who is now in his
nineties, enjoys sharing his experience of the war with the people of Colombia and
beyond. He often talks about how it is important that this episode of the nation's
history and the stories of those who served is not forgotten.
“The members of the navy are a key part of our society. They serve our government
and protect the seas of our country. Recently, a naval veteran came to our school to
tell us his experience serving our country, and fighting in the Korean War. The visit
from the naval veteran was a unique experience and a moment where we could
learn about the Korean War and the situation of our country in that period of time. By
listening to a veteran we are respecting their legacy and honouring their work, in
which they risked their lives while fighting for the pride and honour of our country and
to improve the reputation of Colombia, which at that time was under international
scrutiny for the social and political instability of our country. Without such people as
Don Jaime who fought for our country, it would be impossible for our society to strive
in the modern world, a place that is full of conflicts and inevitable violence that
threatens our society.”

El martes 23 de enero, Don Jaime Álvarez, suboficial retirado de la armada colombiana y veterano de la guerra de Corea (1950-1953), visitó la escuela. Habló en mis clases de historia e inglés de décimo curso sobre su experiencia en el conflicto y el papel de Colombia en él. Don Jaime, que ahora tiene más de noventa años, disfruta compartiendo su experiencia de la guerra con la gente de Colombia y más allá. A menudo habla de la importancia de que no se olvide este episodio de la historia de la nación y las historias de aquellos que sirvieron.
"Los miembros de la Armada son una pieza clave de nuestra sociedad. Sirven a nuestro gobierno y protegen los mares de nuestro país. Recientemente, un veterano de la marina vino a nuestra escuela para contarnos su experiencia sirviendo a nuestro país y luchando en la guerra de Corea. La visita del veterano naval fue una experiencia única y un momento en el que pudimos aprender sobre la Guerra de Corea y la situación de nuestro país en ese periodo de tiempo. Al escuchar a un veterano estamos respetando su legado y honrando su trabajo, en el que arriesgaron sus vidas mientras luchaban por el orgullo y el honor de nuestro país y para mejorar la reputación de Colombia, que en ese momento estaba bajo escrutinio internacional por la inestabilidad social y política de nuestro país. Sin personas como Don Jaime, que lucharon por nuestro país, sería imposible que nuestra sociedad luchara en el mundo moderno, un lugar lleno de conflictos y de la inevitable violencia que amenaza a nuestra sociedad"
