Water Abundance a Solution to Future Drought- Student’s Achievements – High School

We want to celebrate the achievement of Ana Sofia Sarmiento, Isabella Diaz, and Sebastian Arango for their quality work submitted for the 10th-grade water integrated project done during the English and Virtues class at Colegio Rochester.

For the virtues integrated project and 10th English class, students explored the importance of water in Pristine Places through the concepts of a watershed, rainwater-harvesting, interconnectedness, and water-energy nexus. Water is a fundamental resource for survival and has been essential for human survival and the development of human civilization. In English, students addressed the issue of water from its importance to society; how the relationship with water in specific communities has changed so that it remains clean and does not disappear through the sowing of water. 

Students read a chapter from The Rainwater Harvesting Book by Brad Lancaster. They worked in groups and chose one of the eight principles of rainwater harvesting. Each group created a presentation or mind map summarizing the principle assigned. Afterwards, students watched the TEDtalk called: Planting the Rain to Grow Abundance by BradLancaster and answered some questions based on the TEDTalk. To conclude, students designed and constructed a model of a section of their community’s water infrastructure or one that they could implement at home. 

In this project, students focused on their school water source, and some continued with this project in virtues class, connecting this project with the assignment called: Serving the Community. Students implemented rainwater harvesting principles in teaching 6th and 7th graders about some of the techniques learned. These included planting watershed plants in our community to support the UN’s 21st-century sustainability goals and to promote global citizenship in our community.  

We are very proud of Ana’s, Isabella’s, and Sebastian’s efforts and achievements; in promoting more sustainable practices in our community while supporting the UN 21st- century sustainability goals and providing an example for younger students to take care of water.
